Sonic Youth w/ Meat Puppets, Cold Cave @ Wilbur TheatreCold Cave is a three piece on Matador. Looks like they've re-re-discovered Joy Division. If you can't get J. Mascis, go with C. Krikwood. The Meat Puppets were a little sloppy. They played, like, three Nirvana covers. Sonic Youth played primarily from The Eternal. A couple Daydream Nation tracks. Full-throttle guitar, thumping drums. Mark Ibold seemed out of place in his slacker rock flannel, but he's playing bass in Sonic Youth. Thurston Moore channeled Pete Townsend to reasonable effect. He's a tall dude. He ended the evening by falling slowly into the crowd, face first onto his guitar. I'd be lying if I said I could note the nuances in sound between the dozen or so guitars and two stacks a-piece that Lee Rinaldo and Moore cycled through. Kim Gordon is someone's mama, think about that. 8.77 stars The Wilbur Theatre is a weird place to see a rock show. Bathroom attendents. $7 bottles of Sam. If you go get "Floor 2" tickets, the other floor tickets are in corrals under the mezzanine. Great sound, at least, for Sonic Youth. The other bands suffered the learning curve for the house sound tech. Similar set list to the 21st: http://www.nyctaper.com/?p=2016

thx for the review. I think the liquor license of that place is relatively recent. A lot of showgoers used to complain about that.
Still havent been to a show there...
Had you seen Sonic Youth before, tgl?
Nope. My first time.
Might be better to see them touring now instead of during the mid-Nineties. Discuss.
Should have mentioned there was a mother-son pair attending the show. The mother look just old enough that she might have seen them touring Confusion is Sex. Her son was not quite 21. The 50-ish couple rocking out two or three people back from the stage was also excellent.
I have squandered every single SY opportunity I have ever had and it is starting to drive me crazy.
when they are active and touring, they will typically do a Western Mass fundraiser type of date. Really hoping this happens Spring 2010 so I can stop being a live Sonic Youth virgin.
If my friend and neighbor J____ hadn't invited me, I probably would not have thought (or known) to go. Glad I did.
One bit of stage banter from Moore:
"Glad to be here, the end opposite of Western Mass. Can't we all just get long?"
re: all just getting along:
there are an inordinate # of MFY fans in Western MA.
If we get rid of some of these "NY" hats, T Moore may be on to something, here.
I saw them in 1991, on Goo, and then again in 2006, so I can't speak to the mid-90's Tooth. I was still pretty new to showgoing the first time --I think that was my fifth concert-- so I might be gilding a turd, but I remember being completely blown away. I was really impressed by them circa: 2006, too. Hopefully I can see 'em again.

Ha!
I saw them with Stereolab in mid 90's. They blew Stereolab away. nuff said.
