RIP Manute Bol

Shocked to read about this this morning...I never followed basketball a lot, but Manute Bol was pretty big news (no pun intended) back in the day. What a cool dude he was.

Annals of A.I.

Interesting online verson of Watson here.

I beat it 56 to 5.

Longish article about the program and its face-offs against human contestants here.

I especially like the fact that when the computer got flustered, it compulsively answered "What is Tommy Lee Jones!" to several questions in a row. That, and the fact that it didn't know what "IBM" stands for.

Oil

FYI - this is the blog that the more tree huggy people within the oil industry read http://www.theoildrum.com/

lots of good stuff and a lack of cartoon villanism

Melvins / ISIS Sunday June 20th @ the Paradise

Bought my ticket yesterday as I am in desperate need of a night off.

Anyone interested? ISIS is breaking up after this particular tour if that helps to sweeten the pot.

Molten Nava

First MLB pitch. Grand slam.
Odds Daniel Nava is on the team come September? I have no idea. Seriously. Is he a lock through the summer? Does he go 0 for 30 in his next at bats.

Fun nerd stats:
Obviously "Career slugging percentage" = 4.000 perfect.
But my fave and most awkward stat, is "RPA - runs produced average", or "RdAB - runs per atbat", which are also an unthinkable 4.000.

4th guy to hit a GS in his 1st MLB AB (2nd RedSox), 2nd guy to hit 1st pitch GS.
